I wish I knew, too

This is quite possibly the most honest and meaningful one minute of interviewing I have ever had the pleasure of watching. The great Nina Simone is talking about what it means to her to be free. Please take a moment to watch this brief clip and maybe leave a comment about what it means to you to be free. The regularly scheduled (de)programming will be returning soon:

Here is a live performance of I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free from the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1976. Turn down the lights, turn up the stereo and take a rest, you deserve it:

So what’s free to you mean?

Mariagstudios said it best: “What keeps us in bondage is fear.” And the capitalist class has done a magnificent job of ensuring that all of us are kept in a perpetual state of fear. The “War on Terrorism” is but the latest example of their brilliant work. FDR, in his inaugural address, delivered on March 4, 1933, addressed this, too: “…let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself—nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.”

  3. Wow! I absolutely agree with Nina: True freedom is living without fear. So often I feel trapped by many outside things that I feel frozen by fear. Fear of financial insecurity, fear of failure, or fear of true freedom itself. What keeps us in bondage is fear. I’m just talking about life in the US where we always talk about freedom, but don’t always understand it. Look at the Syrians; they have been living in a constant state of fear for too long. I also agree with Janis, “Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.” The Syrian people have nothing left to lose. That’s what will finally move any of us out of fear & into freedom; when we have nothing left to lose.

AS the great late Janis Joplin would sing; “Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose”- Makes sense- I believe that.

Thanx so much for this inspirational reminder from one of my FAVORITE singers that freeddom means casting our fears aside… & I LOVE THE SONG !! What an uplift to fight the blues (the downer kind) with these jazzy blues from Niina – outstanding!

    grace, peace & classy divas – Virginia : )

Nikos Kazantzakis said long ago: “I fear nothing, I hope for nothing, I am free”. I would also add the modern world maladies: boredom and brain wash. Both generated and used by the media for the same reasons, to inflict maximum social changes with the least of resistance by people. And freedom can be felt and achieved through proper education and not the relics of failing systems. And yes you get a taste of freedom through the arts, and by listening tp the great Nina Simone!

  7. Since I stoped to work,
I do not wear a watch, I do not bother if it´s Friday or Monday, I do not feel the Sunday´s afternoon depression, I have no alarm clock to set, I have lost my submissive attitude of a slave born to consume, and the restrictions to the personality that comes with it,

    Since I´m homeless,
I do not worry about bills, I do not worry about what I am going to wear today, what I am going to cook, I spend time going from a place to another, from nature to cities, I do not worry about getting a bed, my sleeping bag fits in my new house, my new house stays 90% of the time on my back, my house simply fits in a backpack,

Since I´ve been aside of the society in my particular way,
I ve re-discovered the freedom of thinking, it has been months I did not watch a TV, I´ve been reading, addicted to Spirituality and finally able to experience it in my daily life, able to decide what to do, when and how, whatever it sounds crazy or irreal,

Since it was a personal choice, I have discovered the true meaning of being free, when the needs disappear, only stays the choices, when the worries disappear, only stays the pleasure of life experience,

This is to me, being free.
    Love,
    J
